Introduction
The New York
State
Insurance
Department
released
circular
letter No.
22 on
September
30, 2009.
This
circular
letter
reiterates
the mandate
for all
insurers to
allow plan
sponsors the
option
to offer
coverage to
qualifying
young adults
through age
29 as
dependents
under family
coverage.
WHAT
THIS MEANS
TO YOU AS AN
EMPLOYEE?
Your group
health plan
may offer
the option
to increase
the maximum
age until
which a
young adult
is
considered a
“dependent”
under the
policy or
contract to
age 29.
However it’s
an
employer’s
choice
whether or
not to offer
additional
coverage.
Your
employer
need not
offer this
coverage.
You must
check with
your human
resources
department
to see if
this type of
coverage is
available.
If so, you
may request
coverage for
your
dependent
through your
group health
plan.
WHAT SHOULD
I DO NEXT?
If you or a
family
member has
questions
about this
notice
please feel
free to
reach out to
your
BenefitsVIP
team for
assistance.
As your
employer’s
broker,
Corporate
Synergies
will
continue to
closely
monitor this
issue and
will keep
participants
informed of
any
additional
changes as
they occur. |
